Ceramic matrix composites

Schnitt durch einen keramischen VerbundwerkstoffCeramic matrix composites (CMC) were originally developed for applications in the aerospace industry as lightweight and high temperature (> 1000 °C) structural materials. They are made of ceramic fibers (e.g. silicon carbide fibers) with a typical diameter of 10 microns, embedded in a ceramic matrix. Because of their high resistance to corrosion, wear and thermal shock and because of their low density, ceramic matrix composites are attractive candidates for long-term use in harsh environments (e.g. in the field of energy and mobility).

Thermophysical testing

For an application in mechanically stressed components a damage-tolerant, "quasi-ductile" behavior of the material is required. The macroscopic mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites are closely related to the properties of the fiber-matrix interface.

The investigations concerning ceramic matrix composites at the Chair for Experimental Physics II are focussed on the characterization of the fiber-matrix interaction, e.g. by means of the single-fiber push-out test.
