Magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy (MTXM)
This synchrotron based method enables imaging of magnetic domains:
-
with a lateral resolution of down to 15 nm
-
with a temporal resolution below 100 ps
-
in externally applied magnetic fields
-
in an element-selective way
-
with a sensitivity to spin and orbital moments
-
with a contrast directly proportional to the magnetization
The magnetic contrast relies on XMCD (x-ray magnetic circular
dichroism).
Due to the limited transmission of soft X-rays samples have to be prepared
on thin substrates,
e.g.
, SiN membranes,
carbon foils or TEM grids
.
MTXM is especially suited to study magnetization reversal processes in magnetic
heterostructures.
