Inhalt Magnetic properties of materials are known since antiquity and the study of magnetic phenomena has been continued ever since. Nowadays, magnetism is one of the central subjects in modern solid state physics. This lecture will give an introduction to the principles of magnetism and the resulting magnetic properties of materials. Classical and advanced technological applications will be discussed. Furthermore, current problems of magnetism and ongoing research activities will be presented that might be continued in form of diploma or PhD thesis. The lecture is accompanied by an exercise course.

I. Introduction and Overview
