Inhalt The lecture gives an overview of the spectroscopic techniques for studying the electronic and vibrational properties of solids. Hereby, the emphasis is on methods where synchrotron radiation is being used.

At the beginning some basic topics will be discussed:

  • Introduction to solid state physics
  • Electromagnetic radiation: description, generation, detection
  • Spectral analysis of electromagnetic radiation: monochromators, spectrometers, interferometers
  • Excitations in solids: Dielectric function
  • Spectroscopic methods with synchrotron radiation: infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy
Possible further topics are: scanning tunneling spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and inelastic neutron scattering.
