Inhalt The lecture gives an overview of the spectroscopic techniques for studying the properties of solids. Hereby, the emphasis is on methods where synchrotron radiation and neutrons are used.

In the first part of the lecture the spectroscopic methods with electromagnetic radiation will be discussed. Some basic topics will be discussed at the beginning:

  • Introduction to solid state physics
  • Electromagnetic radiation: description, generation, detection
  • Spectral analysis of electromagnetic radiation: monochromators, spectrometers, interferometers
  • Excitations in solids: Dielectric function
  • Spectroscopic methods with synchrotron radiation: infrared spectroscopy, ellipsometry, photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy
In the second part of the lecture the neutron scattering technique will be discussed. Hereby, neutron sources, neutron detectors, and different scattering mechanisms will be described.
