Inhalt In this course, several problems of relevance for materials science will be discussed by means of theoretical methods from classical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum theory and statistical mechanics. The aim is to provide an introduction into the concepts of various branches of theoretical physics and to convey an idea of how models can be developped in order to gain physical insight into the behavior of systems of interest.

The topics to be discussed are:

  • Resonse of linear systems to a pulse excitation and to a monochromatic signal
  • Analysis of vibrating systems in terms of normal modes and by exploiting symmetries
  • Quantum mechanics of many-body systems

Vorkenntnisse The students should be able to follow a course held in English. Knowledge in physics and chemistry as certified by a bachelor degree in a discipline of natural sciences according to the admission rules to the elite master program »Advanced Materials Science« is expected.
Weitere Informationen This course is part of the module CH0007 »Theoretical Concepts and Computational Methods«. It will be complemented by a course in »Computational Methods in Materials Science« offered in the next semester. Each of the two courses contributes 4 credit points to a total of 8 credit points for the module CH0007.

Credit points are earned by passing an oral examination of 30 minutes duration. It is planned that the examinations take place from August 1 to August 5, 2011. These dates may be modified according to wishes by the participants.
