Inhalt After an introduction about the importance of surfaces and interfaces and a short repetition of the basics of solid state physics, the lecture will concentrate on the physics of surfaces and interfaces covering the following topics:

  • structure of ideal and real surfaces
  • relaxation and reconstruction
  • transport (diffusion) at interfaces
  • thermodynamics of interfaces
  • electronic structure of surfaces
  • chemical reactions at solid state interfaces
  • surface dominated solids
In the second part of the lecture different methods for the investigation of chemical composition and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces are covered. These are in particular:

  • scanning electron microscopy
  • scanning tunnelling and force microscopy
  • auger-electron spectroscopy
  • photo-electron spectroscopy
