This project aims at a systematic understanding of the electronic, i.e., spin and charge properties of inhomogeneous systems, namely surfaces, interfaces, and heterostructures, with the focus on half-metallic systems like Heusler compounds and colossal magneto-resistance materials. Specifically, we will study the development of half-metallicity near interfaces, and how this property is affected by interface reconstruction, disorder, and electronic correlations. We will address both equilibrium as well as transport properties, in order to elucidate the functionality and technological relevance of these materials.
